Crookneck squash
« on: October 09, 2023, 20:37 »
I grew these this year, only got 2 off at the end of the season, they weren’t very big, I used 1 tonight, I washed it & cut it up removing the seeds etc, chopped it & roasted it.
Should I have peeled it? The skin was very hard. Also there was very little ‘flesh’, is that normal, less than 5mm thick on the whole ?

My old next door neighbour (an American) loved them and grew them every year, so I tried them one year. He ate them through the summer, like courgettes, not for keeping 'til the end of summer and ripening.
I wasn't impressed either, though, and never grew them again, despite often being offered his extras  ::)

Yes, crookneck would be classified as a courgette over there (what we call "summer squash" here in the USA). My yellow squash this year were 'Early Summer Crookneck', they gave a good yield of squash, mostly weighing 1/3 to 1/2 pound each. I pick them before the skin hardens, when the skin is pale yellow, rather than chrome yellow.  Skin should easily dent with a thumbnail. Generally the squash are picked within 5 days or so after pollination (rely on thumbnail test and color to determine when to pick; if the skin starts to darken but it passes the thumbnail test it is still ok, but don't wait longer before picking).

Waiting to harvest at the end of the season explains the low yield and low quality.

In my opinion, crookneck and yellow straightneck are equally good.

Thanks both, sounds like I must have missed them earlier in the season as these were harvested when I cleared the plants after ‘they hadn’t produced anything’ lol
