Greek Giganties seeds
« on: October 07, 2023, 12:47 »
Hi There - new to this part of the Allotment Garden forum - so Hi to everyone

I have just purchased some Greek Giagantes seeds - but not sure if it is too late this year to plant them?

would they survive outside(or even in a greenhouse) over the winter period?

Many Thanks

Good afternoon johhnyscenic,
and welcome to the mad house!  I've grown Gigantes and eaten them here and in Greece (loverly in tomato sauce followed by sickly sweet baclava).  I'm convinced it is too late in the season for growing them this year.

I minimised this message to see which part of the world you are calling from but your message has gorn!  Now why is that ?

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

When I lived in Greece, the local farmers still only planted seed each Spring, although some gardener's had good results from overwintering roots below a pile of compost where they grew, (they are technically tender perennials!) So you could try overwintering the roots of next year's plants)
In the UK I have only ever got a couple of plants to regrow, so for me, it wasn't worth the hassle  ::)

I love them, and grew a lot a few years ago, but the pods rarely got more than three beans each, so the crop wasn't really viable, and I don't have room now!

There's a 'butter bean' post here which I did years ago somewhere, and one of our chums here sent me some to try out, for which I was eternally gratefull! Too late to sow them now, sadly!

I reckon you could live on those chaps - lots of protein and the other stuff as well!
