Ripening end of season tomatoes
« on: September 17, 2023, 13:40 »
Decided to clear out my greenhouse today as the 10 tomato plants in there are starting to rot. As usual this has given me loads of green toms to ripen. Is there a better way of doing this than on a sunny window ledge?

I have found that just laying them out somewhere where they get light, but no direct sun, works better.  Mine are on trays on the dining room table.  They ripen slowly but surely and you don’t get as many shrivelling rather than going red.

Thaks New Shoot. I've been using the sunny windowledge technique for 52 years since we moved to Cumbria and bought our first greenhouse. I'll try your method to see if it saves a few more

I’ve always used the windowsill as well, but this year I had a large stem of a plant suddenly collapse in the greenhouse with that dry brown rot they sometimes get.

We were having a bit of a heatwave at the time, so I thought the green tomatoes would cook on the windowsill.  They ended up on the dining room table and all ripened - even the very green ones, so I have carried on with that method and it has worked on almost every single fruit.

Hello a trick of the trade,we use to put in ripened tomatoes into salted trays and cover with old bed sheets and put a couple of bananas into each tray, the sheets kept the ether gasses in,I'm allergic to bananas guess who had the job of putting bananas in to the trays, I looked like some thing from outer space with the big gloves and breathing apparatus on     jezza
