When I was in Morrisons yesterday I noticed they were selling Westland weed suppressant at £2 per bag. It said on the bag it was more efficient at suppressing weeds than bark chips. Has anyone used this stuff?

No Morrison's here, so I can't offer an opinion on the product. 

However, if you can get them to your allotment, raked and bagged fall leaves are excellent, and free.  Pine straw works so well that people here collect, bale, and sell it as a weed-supressing mulch.

I haven’t used it, but it claims to offer weed protection by laying more flat on the ground than bark chips and therefore blocking light from weed seeds to stop them germinating.  It is probably no more efficient than bark chips for perennial weeds that can regrow from roots, so it depends what kind of weeds you have.

£2 a bag is very cheap though.  You are not going to get bark chips for that price.

Haven’t used it but depending on the size of bag,it sounds a good price & if you laid it over cardboard on paths & would be worth it for a years relief possibly.

I have used the the close-woven black material for my paths and weed control - it lets water through to the soil and stays dry/walkable even after a downpour. If this stuff is similar then happy days!

It looks a bit like coconut shells ground up. Reading reviews online, people say because it holds water, weed seeds germinate in it

I wonder if it will rot quite quickly?

I’d use a good layer of cardboard first anywho.

we also use close-woven black plastic sheeting on our allotments paths round the raised beds then cover it with chippings that a local tree surgeon brings us and it works fine no weeds  just the cost of the sheeting so its nice and clean and tidy can't be bad
