Holes in tomatoes
« on: August 24, 2023, 20:37 »
With one disaster after another my crimsons and beefsteaks started being bountiful then it never stopped raining for a week.  A lot of the steaks have kind of cracked. That is bearable but a lot of the tomatoes have been attacked by some pest leaving a hole. Would that be slugs? They seem to be having a little snack then vacating the premises!
Whatever, as soon as one turns yellow I pounce and pick to let it ripen indoors (more rain over the next week).
The fellow in the house next to the vegetable garden had all his tomatoes struck by the blight, leaves, tomatoes the lot.

Here, I would suspect tomato fruitworm (a caterpillar), or something similar.  I don't know if you have them over there.  If you see frass (caterpillar poop) on vegetation near the fruit, or find a worm inside or on the fruit, that is your culprit.

If the problem is snails or slugs, there will be a slime trail, and no caterpillar frass.

I also pick tomatoes slightly under-ripe to avoid most of the problems with fruitworm. You can "pick and squish" as I do, or use Bacillus thuringiensis, and possibly other controls as well.

When that happens to me it’s usually slugs especially if the stalk has bent over die to the weight of the fruit which touch the ground. Slugs get on and bite, occasionally as an added bonus woodlice get in too and continue the “ good work”.
