Good strawberry harvest.
« on: June 29, 2023, 18:18 »
Good afternoon everyone,
well...the strawberry harvest has been one of the best.  We have so many jars of jam in the preserves cupboard, we normally give a jar for things obtained from freecycle. Friends and neibhours (never could spell that word) have also benefitted.

So... I've been reading about the Amaou strawberry plant from Japan.  Also these super large strawbs.  Anyone have any information on obtaining the former and thoughts on the latter?

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Glad you had a good harvest Tony, our crop has hardly produced anything! Maybe the plants have reached the end of their cycle

I’ve not had as many but that’s because I’ve got less plants but I’ve had plenty from the ones I have got. I took lots up from the in the ground beds, taking runners etc & planted in hanging baskets, 13 plants in each of 24 baskets , 12 for in the poly tunnel & 12 for in the fruit cage. Sadly the plants in the sides haven’t survived it, also I’m finding it difficult to keep them watered now, so I’m going to redo them with water retaining crystals in them to help.

This is my first year and all has gone well. I am however a little disappointed with the taste. I have grown Cambridge favourite. The fruits are large and look wonderful but just lack that really great strawberry taste. Which variety is the tastiest?

Good morning Grubbypaws,  the Amaou strawberry is supposed to be superb (if you can find it).  The ones I grow is Alice 'cos it's me Mam's name!

Cheers,  Tony.
