Garlic is lifted...very disapointing.
« on: June 06, 2023, 14:13 »
Good afternoon gardeners, well after clearing the broad beans and getting a good crop of various sized beans, I then went for the garlic.  Not just very but extremely disapointing.  They remind me of the spring onion "Lilia".  The ground was rock 'ard.

Will try again next year.  Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

It’s very early in the year to be harvesting garlic. Mine won’t come up till July. Were they softneck and if so had they toppled over? Had they gone yellow?

I learnt that lesson one year when I lifted what looked like a big strong garlick in early June only to find very little underneath. They can be quite deceptive.

Yes. You can put them back though...

If the ground was rock hard then they needed more watering. Try re-planting them as advised.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

As others have said, it's a bit early.  Even the Garlic Farm here on the Island haven't started harvesting yet.

Just following the advice..."Harvest when the lower two or three leaves have turned brown and dry".  Could I save the heads and plant later this year?  Cheers,  Tony.

I'd get them back in ASAP if they are still whole. If you've trimmed them already then I wouldn't bother replanting underdeveloped cloves, cook with your fresh green garlic and just get some more for planting in September for next year.

I picked a new variety called primor from my greenhouse, they were ready so a good variety if you want some early garlic. They are very low dormancy though so I'll need to use them within a few months. The porcelain hardnecks I grew last year weren't ready until end of July outside and are still in great condition in my kitchen

Please enlarge/clarify Snow, so you recommend digging a trench and placing the galic heads in there without trimming leaves or roots?
Cheers,  Tony.

Yes if you just pulled them out, put them back in! And water them well, they should continue to grow if the roots haven't dried out. Worth a shot to get bigger garlic
