Growing out of date seed- the results are in
« on: May 05, 2023, 18:53 »
OK slight click bait I admit, it’s only 3 different seeds but thought I’d share. All seeds were best before december 2022 ( who plants seeds in December ? I digress)
1) sweetcorn- woeful. One out of 10 germinated, all the rest rotted
2) cucumbers, 4/10 germinated- I chitted those.
3) cabbages- excellent germination with Primo and Advantage. About 90%.

Yes Kd and Ms. Mp, chitting is often your friend when it comes to older seed!

This year I had a couple cucumber seeds (Garden Sweet) in a packet dated best by 2021.  Newer cucumber seed chitted faster, but the Garden Sweet eventually did sprout (took much longer).  They are growing now.

For old seeds taking a while to germinate while chitting, I find a rinse every day (or at least every other day) seems to help keep them fresh and able to grow.

I sowed some Cobra bean seeds and some Romanesco courgettes, both from 2018.

I chitted some Cobra and nothing happened so I put the remainder in pots and put them in the propagator along with the Romanesco courgettes.

Nothing happened so I duly ordered new.  The morning after I open the propagator and guess what, all the Cobra beans and the courgettes are waving at me happily!  Should have waited.

Isn’t it annoying when that happens! I had given up on the sweetcorn when I saw that blade like leaf emerging in just one of the pots. I didn’t chit them I must admit. I am chitting my second batch of sweetcorn seeds ( new packet) and all but one have sprouted.

I've found a heat mat to do wonders for germination, the vast majority of seeds germinate best between 25c and 30c. It just keeps them at a consistent warm temperature.

Once germinated moved them off though, otherwise everything gets really leggy

Can you suggest any heat mat in particular?  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Mine were just cheap Chinese ones off eBay, they've lasted me about 5 years so far and I've used them to heat homebrew too, with a temperature controller

Something like this

You may think ths is crazy, but my "heat mat" is a shelf inside entertainment center, the shelf sits just above our cable TV box!  ???

It is just a few degrees warmer than ambient air in the room. Seeds chitting in there (in jars) usually germinate in a very few days.

So I bought some watercress seeds from Suttons early in the new year. They were sown in trays in a propagator set at 20C but after 4 weeks none had germinated (they usually take 3 or 4 days to germinate). Tried again with same result. Bought some Mr Fothergills water cress seeds and sowed them at the same time as some more Suttons seeds. Mr Fothergils seeds germinated 100% in 3 -4 days but the Suttons were a no show. So I decided to contact Suttons to let them know there was an issue with their seeds. Their response:-

We test all our seeds for quality and germination.
Your seeds will be replaced (not that I was bothered about that).

New seeds arrived and were sown at the same time as some of the first batch of seeds. New seeds germinated in 3 - 4 days but none from the original batch!

Do you really know how old seeds are and what condition they are in when you buy them? Hmmmm

I have seeds 5 years old that still germinate pretty good. Bit of a lottery but generally seeds from reputable suppliers are pretty good.

By the way watercress is worth growing. Just damp compost needed not running water.

I have a theory that seeds produced in the covid lockdown years are poorer quality. A lot of seeds actually come from China and with the disruption to factory systems there I think a lot of the seed produced was poor quality.
