clamping

im thinking of growing enough carrots to store this year - when u clamp them in sand does it have to be in a wooden crate or will a plastic one be ok?

I've got mine in a plastic box, but there is no lid on it, just the sand covering them.

Do you use bog standard sand pit sand or do you need a special sort as that one is very fine?

I think any sand, or dry compost or peaty stuff, but Brian treated me to a couple of bags of kiln dried!!!!!

It has to be dry though, or they sprout again or rot.

Anyone leave their carrots in ground covered by straw and black polythene? What sort of results?

i left mine in the ground last year and no probs at all...until september then they got carrot fly.very odd, not sure why they were there all that time and only got carrot fly at the harvest time, had eat loads by then as well.
just like black lines going thru the middle of them.i cooked and eat them anyway
