Flies in tomato pots
« on: April 04, 2023, 14:23 »
After the first batch did not show at all, I sowed another 10 Crimson Crush seeds after first chitting them, and now they are coming up. I have some other blight-resistant tomatoes doing really well so far. They are all up in the attic with a sheet of silver paper behind them. Every time I spray them with water I notice some tiny insects flying up. Any idea what they are please? Are they innocuous? Do I need to try and get rid of them?

Likely to be fungus gnats https://www.rhs.org.uk/biodiversity/fungus-gnats

They're unsightly rather than evil , layer of vermiculite on top of the compost can help as do the sticky traps you can buy.

Fungus gnats can sometimes arise if the compost is too wet over time - this may not be the case with your seedlings, but best just to keep an eye on it
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
