I have just planted my bare root strawberries in containers on the patio. Do I have to worry about frosts or is that just a problem if they are flowering? TU

Yes, the plants will be frost hardy… but not the flowers.

As far as I'm aware, if the centre of the flower has gone black, it means the frost has got it and it wont turn into an edible strawb

Correct. Some people nip any early flowers off so the plants can put more energy into later flowers when the weather warms up. See what others say on here.

As I said on another similar thread a few weeks back, ideally if planting around now, don’t let them flower & fruit this year or at the least until later on, so they can build up a good root system, as ideally you want to produce a strong plant that will provide you with good fruits for the next 3/4 years. It really does make a difference. The other way would be to allow fruits this year, then use those plants as parent plants & take the runners off in the autumn & plant them up for future years plants. Then every couple of years repeat the process.
