finally, after only about a year of building and waiting, we have chooks!

Sam collected his ladies from the farm this afternoon. He tried to catch one himself but she ran off, and he talked to them all the way home. now they are in the chookhouse settling in

ive never handled chickens before, well live ones that is, and i was amazed at how soft and silky they are! they are already showing different character each, one is much happier to be handled, stroked etc, was straight up onto the perch, and looking out the pop hole. Ive a feeling that one will be boss. Another is more timid, didnt want to be stroked, but was straight into the nest box!

im real chuffed :D

just been to check on them, three of them were pottering about in the run, came over when they saw me! the fourth was inside, and i had to encourage her out, but then she came down the ramp and joined the others. I had to go in the run with them to pick something up, and they were happy with me in there. rosey away at me, checking out what i was doing :D

more photos tomorrow. It'l be there bedtime soon. Im hoping they will go back in fairly easily

one thing i did notice, they have knocked quite a bit of the bedding out of the next box. This has a lip about 1/4inch high. Im wondering if i should make that higher?

Aww they look lovely Zak and I can't agree more with Aunt Sally.  :D  Hubby and I have spent many a afternoon sat outside (even in the rain with a brolly, but that another story) just watching the chickens.  They always make me smile to myself even when I feel down.

I've been working all day today, it was great to get home and be met by all my ladies and Thomas running down the field to meet me, one of the neighbours couldn't believe what they were seeing, they did not believe that they could be so tame. You will waste loads of time just watching them

went out with Julie when she got home, at sunset, only two of them still out, both became very vocal on seeing us, then the others came out as well!

they had all gone in on their own when i went out just after dark to close the pophole. None were on the perch, but three of them had crammed themselves into the nestbox and were snuggled together, the forth had nestled herself in the corner :D

i guess it will take them a while to get used to a perch, they were living in a big shed before.

Im preparing a big curry later, so will same them a bit of cooked plain rice for a treat tomorrow :D
