Apple bonanza
« on: November 09, 2022, 13:17 »
I have a single Red Falstaff apple tree 6-8 feet tall.  This year it has produced 228 good sized fruit. Three times the number it has ever had before.

My shed, bench, racks, and worktops are full.

I'm giving apples away like a maniac.

Everyone I have successfully accosted is by now stuffed with crumble, strudel, charlotte, baked apples, stewed apples, raw apples, toffee apples, apple juice and apple sauce.

Neighbours are crossing the road when I approach, shouting "No more! no more!"

I'm too old to invest in a cider press.

Anyone else out there whose apple tree has gone bananas?

Previously I've only had about a dozen apples a year on my Braeburn.
This year it went absolutely bananas, I've bottled lots of Apple Butter, Blackberry and apple jam, frozen slices for pies. I think we were mostly frost-free at blossom time, it made such a difference.
Made and eaten  ::) lots of crumbles, cakes and pies and still have a big bowl full looking at me when I go into the kitchen  I even put some chopped apple in my breakfast porridge this morning  :D and yes I have also shared them with friends and family...

For the first time since we moved here two and a half years ago when the five apple trees were sawn down within an inch of their life, we had a big crop. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the apples got bitter pit.  :(
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My Winter Greening hardly ever produces much but this year it has filled the bottom of my fridge! They make an awesome apple cake which is loved by everyone. We also had a glut of beets; OH has just found a recipe for apple and beetroot soup  :)

There's an apple tree that over hangs my new allotment. Sadly all the apples on my side have ended up rotting on the floor. Do food banks take grow your own stuff?
