Rush of runner beans...
« on: July 28, 2022, 17:17 »
All out 'Tenderstar' and 'Scarlet Emperor' have belted away, done all their flowers in a fortnight, right at the top of the poles, and are now going to give us a potential glut...

I've already got ten replacements about a foot high, and will direct sow some more tomorrow, as there's still a chance of a late crop, because at this rate, the first crop will just get the hump and stop doing anything after the huge bounce back, and we're not that keen on frozen beans!

An old chap who used to have a plot next to us always went for three seasons, and usually won out, so fingers crossed!

The white runners on the plot have got into their stride.
The later sown red ones, which I planted in the garden just before the 'heatwave' are about threequarters up the poles and have a few flowers. They usually carry on cropping for ages after the plot ones are finished, because the garden is more sheltered than the plot.  They carry on until it gets really cold at night.
Fingers crossed it works this year as well  :)

Growster, do you think your choice of runner bean varieties are better for that old-fashioned taste because Mr G chose Firestorm and, though they were string-less, there wasn't a lot of taste.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Interesting point, GG, because I always thought a quick 'flower-then-bean' was the best way forward, and they'd flower consistently - until now!

We used to use our old seed, probably a standard old-type red bean, but tried to get newer varieties after listening to chums!

At this rate, I'll take anything that gives us a crop, taste or otherwise...:0~
