Brown marks on early potatoes
« on: May 03, 2022, 21:13 »
Help please. I have just noticed some brown marks on a couple of early potato plants (see attached photographs). It's been fairly cold over here in Belgium but I don't think there has been any frost.
I am sorry the photos are not clearer. And there is some qoil on the plants as I was heaping them up with earth yesterday. Any ideas please?

I would agree that it looks like frost damage.  Sometimes, at this time of the year, there can be a frost in the early hours that only lasts for an hour or two, but it's sufficient to catch the very tender early leaves of potatoes.  As long as there isn't too much damage they will recover and go on to give a crop, but in my experience if there is major leaf damage the crop is greatly reduced.

Thanks for your reply. As I say it has been quite cold but no frost. Now I come to think of it it reminds me a bit of the burns I sometimes see on runner beans when they have been wind-whipped.
