Big mistake
« on: April 27, 2022, 15:22 »
Last year after watching a cookery programme I decided to try Jerusalem artichokes, I bought a pack a 20 tubers and they grew very well, far to much for us to use, so this year I selected 6 tubers to grow and carefully dug the bed to get rid of any stragglers, unfortunately I wasn't carefull enough and they are sprouting amongst my onions.
I am planing to cut any green sprouts that do appear in the hope that they will give up,
The question is will that work or does anyone have a better solution?

They’re not too easy to get rid of.

How to Control Jerusalem Artichokes
Jerusalem artichoke develops new shoots only on tubers formed the previous year. It may seem logical that Jerusalem artichoke weeds should be easily controlled by simply digging the tubers, but, unfortunately, things are not that simple because locating all of the tubers, which grow on long stolons, is nearly impossible. A more effective way of managing Jerusalem artichoke weeds is to pull the young plants as soon as they emerge in spring– preferably when they are about 4 to 8 inches (10-20 cm.) tall. If you have a large patch of Jerusalem artichoke or if the plants are sprouting in your lawn, you can mow them down. Either method works because new tubers are unable to develop without the above-ground shoots. However, total Jerusalem artichoke control requires you to be super vigilant and remove every single sprout.

Out of interest, did you have any...ahem...gaseous disturbances after consuming the aforementioned vegetable, John? I love the taste, but could have solved the natural gas crisis with the after effects.

Loads of wind, could have had a competition with OH.
I read that winter savoury could aleviate the gas situation
