Rhubarb question

Rhubarb question

I originally posted this in the cookery section but no replies.
I've been growing and eating rhubarb, usually stewed at breakfast, all my adult life but there's one question that often puzzles me. It concerns the pale end of the stalk where it joins the rhizome. Is it edible and if so why does everybody (as far as I'm aware) discard it before cooking? I'm occasionally tempted to cook it and find out but have always lacked the courage. Anyone know?

I didn't reply to your first post because I don't know the facts of the matter  ::)
I only know that I was told by my Mum to trim the root end off, so I always have done.... 
 :D

Decided to collect and stew half a dozen of the white root-ends to see what they taste like. Just a taste mind, not yet ready to go any further :)

talking about Rhubarb what's the best sweet tasting  Rhubarb variety we can grow we grow several varieties of Rhubarb but they all need a good dollop of sugar when cooked  :D

Always cut the end off and compost it along with the leaves.

Be honest, rhubarb is such a vigorous crop, that I'm happy to cut the end off.
Eat loads fresh as Rhubarb and custard or mixed with yogurt.
Make loads of rhubarb crumble to freeze and use through the rest of the year.
Do also freeze a load in tubs and just pull out a handle to mix in and make rhubarb muffins or make some winter rhubarb and custard/yogurt as a treat.

As for sweetness, I have Timperley early and Victoria varieties and both need a little sugar. I just add a level teaspoon to water in a pot and stir it in well before adding the rhubarb to the pot for cooking and that seems to work just right.

I've never used sugar on any cooked rhubarb, nor in tea or coffee for that matter

I don't sugar my rhubarb either. I prefer to put something sweet with it if necessary - like custard  :tongue2:  :tongue2: .
