Thanks for all these tips about chitting and suckers.
It's a strange year in that I have never had these crimson crush seeds fail before (five or six years growing them).
I have also changed allotments this year and my beetroots and Swiss chards have failed to come up as well.
So I think I will try the chitting technique with these seeds. I used to chit my parsnips (a long, long time ago, as I went off the taste of parsnips).
So refresh my memory please. As soon as the seeds begin to sprout do I then sow them in the garden and cover them with soil (not the tomato seeds of course, which I suppose go into pots and are then covered with soil).
As a matter of interest, what vegetables have you other members planted over the years and then gone off?
I used to love parsnips but find them pretty bland now and not worth the trouble growing.
I used to grow lots and lots of "marrows" and could store them as late as Februrary in the cellar, I seem to remember. I now grow far fewer plants and eat them courgettish size.
I used to grow lots of frizzey-type red salads, as they had the advantage of deterring slugs. I have gone off them and generally grow four-season lettuces (the slugs are not as keen on them and the lettuces have much the same texture and taste as the common green ones you buy),...
