i wish to plant some raspberry plants in a line but don't really want them spreading out sideways.

I have some weed membrane material and was wondering whether this would be suitable, to line the two sides of the trench I dig, for the plants. It's a strong 'industrial strength' membrane, not the cheapie black stuff you get in the pound shops.

I have some old decking boards too .. would they help

thanks

You'd be better off burying something to the sides of the plants to provide a channel for the suckers/roots to grow along, maybe wood like decking boards.  Not sure how deep you'd need to go.  Membrane will just get pushed up I reckon.  I've found potatoes left in the ground and covered in membrane will just lift it up when they grow, and raspberries are much stronger/woodier so would expect them to do the same.
