Potting on leeks
« on: March 08, 2022, 14:05 »
I am growing leeks in roottrainers. I put them into ordinary multipurpose compost and they seem OK, but they still have a way to go before they will be going into the ground. Should I pot them into larger containers with fresh compost, or just feed them?

personally Maewyn I would just keep feeding them but from what your saying you sowed the leeks in MP compost that should last a few weeks before you need to feed?

as a point of interest I assume you have pricked them into your root trainers? or did you sow the seed in the root trainers?

we usually sow ours leeks thinly in a deep tray and let them grow to a pencil size before planting out but I think root trainers seem to me a good idea

I grow them in a very similar way, at a 1" grid spacing in a double-sized seed tray filled to with in 1/2" from the top. At planting time the tray is banged several times on the floor to loosen the compost and the loosened seedlings are then easy to shake apart

Not heard of anyone growing leeks in root trainers and potting on.

I have always grown leeks in deep containers.
Last few years in deep pots, that are 9 inches deep.
Sowed mine Feb 14th in greenhouse.
Up nicely now and would expect to plant out late May and early June, when pencil width.
Here are mine growing today in the greenhouse...
I always give one of those pots to my Dad too, when ready for planting out.
