Raised bed Potatoes
« on: February 27, 2022, 13:23 »
OK, so I've got my seed potatoes, earlies and 2nd earlies I'm growing in bucjets but my maincrop, Desiree, will be grown in one of my raised beds. I know what the spacings are in open ground with no restrictions, but in real life how many seed potatoes could I plant in a raised bed 3.1 x 1.2m?

I should also say that they will be planted in an 18" deep bed that is currently 9" filled, so any plants that come through will be covered with compost, rather than mounded up into rows if that makes sense!

I would only put 2 rows as they need to be approximately 600 spacing between rows

Then you will fit 7 seed potatoes per row as I plant them 450mm apart
So in answer to the question I wouldn’t put more than 14 in total for main crop

Last year in my 3m x 1.4m beds I had three rows of 6 potatoes . I use a trowel to plant the seed potato about 3 inches below the soil level and then just use either lawn clippings or compost to cover them, I recommend lawn clippings if you have enough . I got a really good crop of potatoes the majority of which can be harvested by hand and are super clean. One thing do not forget to water them!

Well, after looking at the weather forecast for the next couple of weeks with minimal temperatures of +4⁰c I'm biting the bullet and planting out my Desiree maincrop potatoes today. Just in case mother nature wants to chuck a spanner in the works I'll put my fleece on emergency standby  :D :D
