Self speeded raspberries
« on: February 12, 2022, 10:58 »
Hi , two years ago,  some self seeded raspberries grew to about 6ft high but never fruited . At the end of the year,  I chopped them down. The same happened last year. I've got no idea if they are summer or autumn fruiting as they have never fruited. Should I not cut them back this year?

Going by their height it sounds like they're summer fruiting. So for now, I'd just prune out any old brown/dead stems and any spindly growth, give them some support and then leave them to grow.
At least then you can see when they fruit, if they do, and more importantly whether they are worth keeping, as self-seeding fruit may not be.

Hi, thanks for your quick response. Yes, I'll leave them and see what happens. I didn't realise that self seeded ones don't always come to fruition   :)
