Moving Asparagus??

Good afternoon all
Our allotments are going to be converted to housing within a couple of years.
I have a mature asparagus bed which I would want to move to home when this happens. Whilst I suspect the optimum time to move the plants will be in the winter I can’t be certain of the timing for a move. I am also aware that it would be easier to identify plants at the end of cropping in say June. What do you all think are the pros and cons of different timings. Would it be viable to move plants after they have cropped rather than when they are dormant ?? Appreciate your thoughts

Thanks Nobbie I won’t rush into moving them based on your experience!!
Very annoying though that our allotments are to be built on without any compensation for lost crops such as asparagus. We are offered new plots but I expect many older plot holders will just give up rather than try to create a new allotment.
