Good morning everyone, 
just got a bit chilly hanging out the washing, I could have put on a jacket and hat but being a rufty tufty Northener...

Anyway, has anyone successfully grown ginger from a 'nodule'?

I've grown a section of ginger root (rhizome) into a larger root over the course of a year. I'm guessing that when you say nodule, you mean one of the penny-sized bumps on the rhizome that can make a shoot?  You would probably need more root than that.

It is definitely a tropical plant, you would need to grow in a heated greenhouse or indoors when it is cold outside.

I grew a piece an d managed to get it through its first winter indoors, tried to get it through second winter and it died, maybe should have taken it out of the pot or should have harvested in the first year possibly. If you get a decent bit of growth I would suggest taking some and try to grow the rest the next year. FYI it spreads rather than having deep root so a trough rather than a pot would be better.

By the way, Subversive_plot, when you said the size of a penny I assumed it was an old penny,  it must be an age thing!

Yes, we are probably talking about roughly the same size.  Our pennies are a little less that 2 cm in diameter.  I think you would want at least a 7 or 8 cm long section of rhizome to try growing ginger.  (Sounds like the point is moot anyway).
