Direct grown swede
« on: May 31, 2021, 18:52 »
Hi
Started some swede from seed direct where they will grow. Have thinned today but a bit concerned they seem a bit "floppy" as I usually plant brassica plants a bit deep. Would it be a good idea to replant the seedlings? Have grown in modules before but root development has been hit and miss ? Thanks

Could you earth them up a bit?

Hi Snowdrop, I did wonder about that.  I hadn't sown them as thin as i thought so had to remove quite a few seedlings which didnt help. Will check on them tomorrow and see if they have picked up.Doesn't say anything in the book or RHS. Might sow some as backup.

You should be able to replant them if they're young. I normally start mine in modules and transplant them out, then bury them nearly up to the leaves.

I often get this with swede when thinning out, they soon recover and are best left to get on with it. Transplanting in this weather is unlikely to do them much good.

Hello try sowing thinner,a drill like a Wolf Garten seed master with different rings is useful, commercially grown swedes are never thinned now as they are prescion drilled, the thinning can be grown I once planted some a bit deeper than they were in the original row they grew better than the original row   jezza

Thanks for all the replies. Covering all bases by planting a few of the thinnings deeper,  leaving and starting a few in modules. Problem is that not sure I will use so many but better than having none I guess. TBH I did sow a bit heavily as germination problems this year but these have been fine. Just can't tell.
