Hi folks, is anyone familiar with soil/compost ph who can answer me this.

We are trying no dig and got a lot of spent mushroom compost which we've made beds with. I then read that mushroom compost tends to be alkaline so shouldn't be used on fruit. So I decided to check with a soil pH testing kit, but it's showing as acidic - around 5.5-6.0

Can mushroom compost be acidic? Or could the test not be working properly because it's compost instead of soil? (Maybe a stupid question, I'm not a chemist!)

Kind of worried we've gone and made all our veg beds too acidic now

Just add lime ( pelleted limestone, dolomitic lime if you can get it) to adjust the pH. Soil pH of 5.5-6.0 is not too off for many crops.

As you adjust pH, do so gradually. It's not necessary to make all of a pH change in one growing season.

Which type of test kit did you use to measure the soil pH, and how did you do the test?

Unreliable pH results are more likely than acidic mushroom compost; also, did you check your pH before applying the compost?  If not, then you don't have a baseline from which to see the effect of the mushroom commpost.
