Tomatillo
« on: March 25, 2021, 09:29 »
has anyone grown Tomatillo because this is the the first year we have decided to grow this vegetable as described in the seed catalogue as being  part of the tomato family and popular in Mexico used for salads and salsas?

we started the seed of with our other Tomato seed but they seem to grow very quickly and leggy so i thought why not ask for some advise from our members so any advise for  growing Tomatillo would be most appreciated

I grew them last year. My seeds were received via the seed circle on here. Treated exactly as tomatoes. You need to grow at least 2 plants as they are self-infertile. The seedlings where quite leggy for me as well, but I just put sticks in the pots to support until the were planted out in the GH.

A word of warning: these are thugs, growing vigorously in the GH! I grew 4 plants but this was 2 too many! They took over and I ended up with loads of fruit. Worse still, if you try to cut them back they come back stronger.

Very nice in salsa etc and have lovely zing to them. I even added some to a curry and they really lifted it.

PS - Potterer, just start them at the same time as tom's. I would do them now I if were you.

Hello there, I grew them a few years ago, not really knowing what there were and how to use them, but with such an unusual name...  I didn't find them at all dificult, in fact your plea may prompt me to grow them again.

If you want something unusual try climbing courgettes!

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Hi!
Grow these every year. Sown with the tomatoes.
Easy to grow. Need support as the fruits can be heavy.
No problems with pests or blight.
Excellent as chutney or salsa or even just as fried tomatillos!
Reliable and useful!

I've have several pots still on my windowsill with just seed leaves. Not sure what's going on. I sowed them weeks and weeks ago.
