Totally freaked out!
« on: February 16, 2008, 18:01 »
Hi
I have only owned chooks since Sept 2007 so don't know my @rse from my elbow   but I thought chickens only laid 1 egg a day.  From my understanding they lay approx every 25 hours.
The thing thats freaked me out is my mother hen DEFINITELY laid 2 eggs in 1 sitting today.  There is no way it was either of the other girl as they had already laid.
Is this a common occurance?
I need reassurance that she's not a devil chicken!!

One of mine has laid two eggs in one day (twice) recently, except that the second egg, laid early evening had no shell..... body clock thing I think. The egg the next day was ok.

Thanks for your replies.  Its a relief to know shes not a devil chicken although the looks she gives me through the patio windows are a bit on the evil side.
I thought she was making a bit more of a song and dance than usual and the result was 2 perfect good sized eggs.  No wonder she made so much fuss then came out and stuffed her face all afternoon.
Wonder if she'll lay tomorrow?

They've all got "the evil eye" IMHO we had one once and the kids called it "evil edna" and they still talk about her even after 7 yrs or so used to go for anything that got too near her  like fingers etc

Be interesting to see if she lays tomorrow, my moneys on not.

I guess it could be similar to having a double yolk egg.  two released at the same time wrapped up together.  So two released the same day and wrapped up separately would give two eggs.

YES!
Evil looking devil chicken "Mother Hen"   laid today!  Her daughters laid in the morning and she laid this afternoon, just the one though.  I label my eggs with the initial of the hen and the date (sad I know), its weird that on the 16th I got 4 eggs from 3 hens.
I haven't used either of the "double" eggs but have looked closely and there is no sign of 666 on either of them.

Ness, do you label the eggs so that you know who's you're eating and can monitor for colour, taste etc!!? Sounds like fun, although I'd have to sit with the girls all morning ...and maybe into the afternoon too , as some of them like to take their time!  Actually...what a brilliant idea...in the name of research of course!!

You've made it sound a lot more scientific than it is - I'm not sure why I label the eggs but I feel better for it!  With only 3 hens its pretty easy - but you right about them taking a long time!
