Wormery and rats
« on: November 21, 2020, 08:02 »
We donít currently compost any of our kitchen waste to stop rats visiting the compost bins. However we have still had a visitor and Iíve had to ask neighbours to take down bird feeders.

We have a fancy peddle chicken feeder but even put that away at night to discourage rats.

Iím annoyed at giving the council our veg scraps and am thinking of getting a wormery that could live in our stone shed. Iím concerned that the rats might try to chew in, has anyone had this problem?

There was a steel model but itís now out of stock everywhere

If you get some weld mesh, you can put this under and a compost bin, this would stop rats but not mice.
Rats will chew through plastic and wood, so store everything in metal bins.
Runs should be L shaped under the soil by at least a spade depth and width to keep rats out.
You could put rat traps down, making sure that other creatures are safe from this.
Homebase sells weld mesh at a good price.
