I’m in London and it’s forecast to rain until Tuesday next week, then a longish spell of dry weather. I’m asking because about 50% of this years garlic was rotten when harvested. I’m thinking of putting sharp sand at the bottom of the planting holes, but should I also wait until this wet spell is over before planting? Thanks.

I wouldn't plant anything in this very wet weather - except maybe watercress

I normally plant my garlic into pots of compost rather than into the ground. They'll get started quite happily and can then be transferred in the new year when it's a bit drier.

When my garlic rotted, it was because I left it in the ground to long when it was wet in the summer. I always harvest it now before any substantial rain is forecast after it has reached full size. Never had a problem with it rotting after planting, despite being on heavy clay.

Nicely put mum.
That’s interesting re late harvesting Nobbie. Come to think of it, I may well have done that.
As a miser, I can’t really justify all the compost and pots I’d need to pre plant, but I can see that that would work well @Plot1.
