potatoes a bit bland?
« on: October 25, 2020, 15:11 »
as I've said in previous topics we have had a very good crop of late potatoes [Kestrel] this season had a few blighted but good size and seem to be keeping well however when cooked they don't seem to have the flavour that some I've grew in the past  for instance both Cara and Desire i feel had more flavour when boiled

although i have to say we haven't yet tried Kestrel for chips or baked maybe there a better potato for baking or chipping we did also grow some Red Duke of York that we are cooking at present and they do seem to have more flavour when boiled than the Kestrel?

I did say i would be growing Desire next season as a main crop potato but I'm still undecided I may go with Red Duke of York

it would be interesting to hear what potatoes other gardeners grow for its  flavour for boiling chipping and roasting

I usually grow Desiree 'cos they do well in dry summers , I should have done because the varieties I tried instead didn't grow well at all. Lesson learnt  ::)
I do like a nice waxy potato, although others prefer the floury ones - it's all a matter of taste :)

I find Desiree a very reliable and versatile main crop, its main disadvantage being that it is very prone to scab in my alkaline soil.

I've grown Maris Peer, Nicola and Charlotte this year, very impressed as a second crop. :)

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I grew Sarpo Blue Danube for the first time this year.
It is excellent as a roast potato, gets lovely and crisp with a great flavour.
It is also good very finely sliced and baked with butter (as in Pommes Anna and Gratin Dauphinois).
Not so good boiled or mashed though.
I am growing it again next year just for the roasties.
I have liked my Kestrels for jackets and mash.

We usually grow Charlotte for roasties, boiling and mash.
A few Kestrel for oven chips and roasties
and Sarpo Kifli for roasties, boiling, oven chips and lightly mashed. Kifli are more waxy than the other Sarpos, retain a freshly dug potato flavour and store well.

I grew both Kestrel and Desiree this year and for mash the Desiree was better but as mum said it's all a matter of personal taste
