To scion or not to scion that is the question
« on: October 13, 2020, 12:26 »
Good morning everybody,     I'm in a bit of a quandary,  I tried to graft about ten scions last year and one has taken, more did but the birds landing on them caused a few to break off.

I'm going to try again this year but some sources say "Take scions now and store in a fridge wrapped in film".  While others say Get the scion when you are about to graft.

Which do I go for knowledgeable apple people?

P.S. I could always do both!

Cheers,  Tony.

Hi. I collect and graft apple scions every year with, generally, what I would consider to be a good success rate :D

I always collect my scions in the dead of winter - end of December/January and make a slit trench somewhere shady and bury them to about half their length. They keep well like this until grafting time.

This works for me, but Ill be interested if others do it differently. Hope this helps.

Good afternoon Deborah1,  I presume by "slit trench" you just jab the spade blade into the soil, give it a wiggle and there you are?

Cheers,  Tony.
