Manure
« on: October 05, 2020, 08:58 »
Hi

Is using manure still advisable?

Read a bit about people having issues due to some pesticides farmers may be using

Also anyone know if it's possible to get any for free and if so how

Cheers

It's actually herbicide rather than pesticide residues that could be a problem.

You need to find locations in your area which might be happy to give away their manure, but whether it be horse manure from stables, farm manure or manure from other animals, I would strongly recommend talking to the owner if possible to check whether herbicides were used on the grazing land or in other feed materials.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Hi, I notice that you hail from Caerphilly. I get mine from Pencoed College just a short car journey from you. It's free to anyone who wants it, just bring your own containers and fork. The trouble is at the moment, both our areas are on restrictions and we can't travel outside our area. When the restrictions are eased you now know where you can get your free supply from. Hope that helps.

Good advice from JayG, when you collect take a look also if you can at the pasture where the animals are kept, there should be plenty of weeds. Herbicide can come in however on winter feed without the owners knowledge, unfortunately while ever this weedkiller's used it's going to be a game of poo roulette for us gardeners.
