Hello. Can anyone tell me if there’s a reason not to pick walnuts off the tree still in their green husks rather than waiting for them to fall? A couple have already fallen so they’re ready (or almost), but I’d rather pick the whole lot in one go than scrabble around in the long grass trying not to miss any

I saw a program about that on TV.

When the nut is ripe the green case begins to split.

Hello they might not be quite ripe if they're still on the tree unless there split,chance half a dozen push a sharp needle into them if theres resistance they could be ripe  jezza

Thanks to both of you for your comments. I’m going to leave it for a couple more days and then crack a couple to see what’s going on.

If you have spare netting or sheets lay them out and shake the tree
