Disaster Spuds
« on: September 19, 2020, 15:59 »
Got it badly wrong with my late spuds!
Is this Blight?
The leaves had brown spots and I lost tomatoes in a nearby Polytunnel tunnel too?

Is there a blight alert for my phone?

Yes, it's blight, but for the spuds all is not lost. Remove all top growth and leave the spuds in the soil for a couple of weeks, to set their skins and then dig them up. Obviously remove any damaged tubers straight away, and keep a check on them for tubers that start to rot once in storage - but most are usually ok to use.
Good luck ...

Hi. My commiserations! As mum has said you might be lucky and the tubers themselves may be ok. You’ll know if they’re not as they will smell and look bad!

Provides a daily warning if conditions are right for blight in your area. It's not a fool proof way of predicting blight but can help you be a little more vigilant for the first signs of it.
