Any chance of a second crop of figs?
« on: August 24, 2020, 13:15 »
I’ve been really enjoying my first decent crop of Brown Turkey figs. The piccy shows one of the last of the current crop and a potential second crop of smaller fruits. Am I right in thinking that it’s too late for these to develop fully and ripen outdoors before winter? Anyone succeeded in getting a second crop outside?

Very unlikely, my tree never managed it, even in years with an Indian summer, and it doesn't look like we'll be getting one of those either  ::)

I have just started to get figs from my tree which is loaded with fruit. I have lots of figs very like the ones you have on your tree. These figs will all ripen before the end of September there will be a few really small figs left which will get bigger over the winter into next spring but they will never ripen and usually just fall off. It has been a very hot dry summer down here this year and the figs have really benefited from it I had some with cheese at my dinner tonight and they are so sweet. I find the problem with figs is the tree has so many we can never use them all and they get scoffed by blooming big hornets. We have tried making jam and the like but to be honest we don't like it so it is fresh or nothing.

After the leaves fall remove any figs over pea size, the larger ones do not overwinter well.
