Veg list - am I doing too much?
« on: February 13, 2008, 20:44 »
Hiya.
I am just getting around to thinking about the Allotment after a hectic time since Christmas with work etc.

I have looked through a seed catalogue, and was wondering if people could let me know if any of these will be too difficult for a first time grower, or if I am trying to do too much!

Chard
Watercress
Radish
Spring Onion
Rocket
Pak Choi
Borlotti Beans
Beetroot
Broccoli
Sprouts
Carrots
Courgette
Garlic
Onions
Squash
Spinach
Sweetcorn
Potato

Thanks for checking!

Chard - never tried it
Watercress  - do you mean land cress, that's easy
Radish - easy
Spring Onion - easy
Rocket - easy
Pak Choi - never tried it
Borlotti Beans -never tried it
Beetroot - easy
Broccoli - easy needs soil preparation, firmand limed
Sprouts - dotto
Carrots - easy, but protect from carrot fly
Courgette - easy
Garlic - easy
Onions - easy
Squash - yuck
Spinach - easy
Sweetcorn - easy, be careful not to cause root disturbance
Potato - easy unless maincrop, then could have problemwith blight

I think what you have chosen to grow should be easily doable for your first year.  I would also add peas, broad beans and runner beans.

We'll all give you a hand

Veg list - am I doing too much?
Cheers Aunt Sally.
First step is getting an order in, hoping to do that within the next week, so wanted to know if I was going off course or over the top!

As I am only growing for myself, I hope I dont plant too much (although I am sure friends will be more than grateful for the excess veg!).

Am I right in thinking the only things I need to get on straight away is potatos and garlic?

Thanks!!!!

Just have a go - you'll learn more for next year. I planted everything too close together, lost labels, failed to grow peas....
And now I have learnt my lessons....
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Don't miss out the borlotti beans you can grow them around your sweetcorn in the same bed they will be supported by corn. Look good and taste good plus can eat whole bean (inc pod) early on then just beans as they mature.

Cheers HH :)
Keep digging

You'll be fine with your list gingerbob just follow the instructions on the packet.  Have you got "Vegetable and Herb Expert" by D.G. Hessayon.  A must have  :!:

I've never tried to grow chard, I don't need to it keeps coming up all over the place anyway!  Therefore I should say it's gotta be easy to grow

Sounds very very familiar noshed.  I was very green last year.

As far as space is concerned, unless a variety demands a lot of space, fill gaps in as much as possible cos if you don't the weeds will.

Chard is very easy to grow.  No real pests, certainly I've never seen any and the plants will overwinter in the ground.
