Old Strawberry Plants
« on: August 03, 2020, 17:25 »
My strawberries fruited and they have had lots of babies, sadly some I had to let go as there were loads. I have some babies growing nicely in pots for next year. SO my question is should I dig up the 'mothers' or will they quite happily come back next year and produce more fruit?

I think it depends on the age of the mother.
From other strawberry related posts I think it's about 3-4 years...I'm no expert!

Good morning green gloves,
the roots of strawberrys are a begger to rot down in the compost heap.  I had some in the bottom of a heap for about three years and they came out the same as they went in!

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

4 years is probably a good average lifespan to maximise productivity - given that they reproduce so freely there seems little point in stretching it beyond that.

Best to start a new strawberry patch if you've been using the same ground for several years (helps to avoid the build up of viruses and other diseases.)

New plants are best left to establish in their first year rather than being allowed to fruit (i.e. remove flowers), so you need to work out a regime to have a mix of new and established plants at any one time.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
