Managing Bush Tomatoes any advice
« on: July 04, 2020, 09:35 »
Morning all
Hope everyone is staying safe an well
I know the line is 'You dont need to do anything to bush tomatoes Just leave them"

Well I have and they are going great guns so much in fact that despite the 80cm gap between them they have merged into one mass!!. Now I'm happy if thats ok (this is the first year I have grown them) but having lost a whole crop the other year to blight i'm obviously a little worried at the close proximity.
Do I pinch out the top at some point??? I have put in 1 metre canes to support them

Thanks in advance
Twood
Happy Gardening May your plot be abundant in veg and free from slugs ! :)

Bush (aka Determinate) tomatoes will flower/fruit at the end of each of their growing stems/branches, so any pinching out, will reduce the harvest.
I'm sorry to say it, but - I think that if they're going to get blight, they will, near together or far apart  :(

As said you are at the mercy of the dreaded blight. I am in a fortunate position I can get something to prevent it.  That said there are some who grow their tomatoes in tunnels down here ... you can get them started earlier and no need to spray. I do wonder how the wine growers in the UK get around the problems.

There are sprays available to professional that are not available to amateurs.  Not sure what the are though.

Lots of advice here :

When the RHS says
Quote
There are currently no fungicides available for use by gardeners ...

I take that to mean there some available for farmers and vineyards.

Aunty you beat me to it  :D

Tells you all you need to know! Copper Sulphate is nowhere near as dangerous as the potions that people blast about the place ... because it is available to them

Thanks to you all for replying
To be honest I'm not keen on using chemicals as useful as they maybe sometimes. So I'll just have to bite the bullet and see what happens with them.
It would help if we had a bit more sunshine instead of this pattern of reduced temp and cloudy weather for 2 weeks followed by sunshine for a few days. Rinse and repeat.
Oh well I guess those are the trials of the good old british weather!!!

Good luck out there chaps

I've always just them grow and do my best to prop them up and always have had masses of toms. I did have the start of blight I think the other year (is that when they go brown?) so I picked a load of them and took them home to ripen on my windowsill.  I take it that blight is wind driven rather than through the soil.

Dry winds are ok, it needs warmth and high humidity. Thunderstorm weather is just perfect for it  :(

Somewhere else on the forum, is a post about alternative methods to control blight, and I still think that soluble aspirin is one way to get relief, maybe not all the time, but more than somewhat!

(And that's not just for a headache either..;0)

Like this one Growster..

If the DM link in the thread won't load for you (took ages just now) it says
Quote
Rebecca Brown, professor of plant sciences at the University of Rhode Island, recommends adding 250 to 500mg of aspirin to around 4.5 litres of water and spraying plants two or three times a month.

She warns that the solution is only effective before the first signs of blight.

Blight isn't the problem here, at least not outdoors. Keeping them upright and stopping branches blowing off them is the problem.....horrendous weather here last few days. Low pressure systems tracking right over us repeatedly. 35-40mph winds, cold and wet.  >:(
