URGENT HELP!!
« on: February 12, 2008, 17:21 »
Hi, everyone. I have a 1 year old Maran who has up untill now been fit healthy and happy. Today she has stayed in the house in the dark. Her Comb is lying flat and she appears to be straining around the vent. Thought at first that she might be broody (never has been before) but could she be egg bound? What do i do about it. She seems not to have any get up and go at all. Really worried.

Thanks in advance

 :(

Someone who has experienced an eggbound hen will be along to help.
I seem to remember others saying that you can feel around pelvis and abdomen for egg? And that treatments such as a lubricant around the vent and holding chicken over steam help. That might give you enough info to look up on google?
Sorry i cant be more help

This reply is being dictated to me by Muntjac as we speak......
Little bit of vaseline on the fingertip....insert gently into the cloaca (vent) massage very gently with your finger. If there is a lump between the breastbone and the cloaca put thumbs and fingers either side and massage behind the lump towards the tail. Do this VERY gently....so as not to break the egg.

Check out the thread on layers cramp I posted a few days ago. Foxy posted a very useful link in it. Would copy it here, but would take me longer to find out how to do so than it will take you to find the other thread!
Good luck with your chook :(
