« on: June 20, 2020, 09:32 »
Hello everyone!
I have 4 girls all laying but 3 have scabby vent area.
I'm trying to keep organic so any ideas that are not nasty chemicals?
And what is it?!
Thank you. X

Hi and welcome  :)

That looks like vent pecking, which is damage done by another chicken.  If you look it up you should be able to find a lot of info.  It is usually associated with commercial laying birds and is due to over crowding, stress or other factors in their living conditions.

If you have 1 bird that is OK and 3 that are being attacked, you may have a serial pecker and she will need dealing with.  Worst case scenario is that you will have to cull her as it is not fair on the rest, but you could try anti-pecking rings, which fit onto the beak.

Hi! Thank you. They did need more space and now they have an extended run a bit further from my house. But when they were little I wanted them near me.

It totally makes sense that one is not pecked.
Let's hope that the outdoor free run does the trick and they chill out!

They are only about 25 weeks. X
