Sowing courgette seed now
« on: June 15, 2020, 10:22 »
Morning all,

In light of my blackfly post yesterday and the chance I might lose my 5 plants, would I get away with sowing some more seed now, and will they catch up pretty quickly with the others?

I live on south coast, so it’s usually warm
In to September/October.

Has anyone else sown them this late, and had success?

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I’m about to sow mine this morning as in the night I remembered that it is the courgettes that  I’ve forgotten to sow  . I’ve known for weeks there was something! I shall sow them & bring them into the conservatory or I might even pop the propagater on to give them a quick boost. I’m hoping I can plant them out within 2 weeks.

Absolutely go for it, nothing to lose.
The only advice I can give was given to me after germination failures. It worked very well, taking just a couple of days for the root shoot to appear, at least you'll know if you've got viable seed. Saves waiting 10 days for nothing to happen!

You could try chitting the seeds first, just pop in an old marg tub with some damp kitchen paper and put somewhere warm. They should sprout in a couple of days and then pop into pots. I find them more prone to rotting when put straight into soil, maybe there are more fungus around to attack them.

I've managed to rot off even pregerminated courgette seeds by overwatering , so if pregerminating, keep the compost no more than moist - if not, water well after sowing, then 'ditto' (don't want any further mishaps now!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I sowed some extras last week and they’re up already in the greenhouse. I tend to find the early sown ones run out of steam a bit and these should take up the slack When they do. My April sown ones have just started cropping, so you should get a crop by August :)

Likewise I sow a couple at the end of June to keep me going from September onwards until the first frosts so go for it!
