Runner bean has lost its climbing shoot
« on: May 30, 2020, 22:06 »
My wigwam of runners is doing fine , except one. It was damaged in the recent wind and its leading shoot was broken. Will another climbing shoot emerge or is that it for this little chap? The plant looks healthy but its not climbing. I have a packet full of beans as stand by. Should I remove and start again on this cane? Thanks, Hugh

As long as it has some leaves they usually regrow - no reason not to sow another seed nearby, though - just in case  ;)

You should find that you get a pair of new growing points developing from between the first seed leaves and the stem (two for the price of one!)

(I'm still trying to work out how one of my bean seedlings in a paper pot which got its main stem completely snapped off below the seed leaves after an encounter with a neighbour's cat which got shut inside my house managed to grow a completely new shoot from below soil level - never say 'it's impossible'!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I dropped in to ask the same question, Hugh!
I'll pop another seed into the bed next to the damaged one in case it doesn't make it :)

Thanks Jay G. Like you Vagabond I have now planted some seeds near to the one with the broken leader as suggested by Lesley, just in case.  Good luck. Hugh
