Rabbits?
« on: May 05, 2020, 19:40 »
Have noticed in last couple of weeks that a few plots have had fence/chicken wire built around them.
Spoken to couple of plot holders who say they lost most of their crops last year to rabbits.
I did lose all of my squash last year apart from one but brassicas under netting were fine, onions too.
Didn't bother with sweetcorn last year but things like beetroot and peas and beans were fine too.
Have lots of lovely healthy squash plants and 100% germination for sweetcorn but not sure what to do.
Most of the plots haven't bothered so far but 5 out of about 20 have.
Could try to get chicken wire from somewhere but have plenty of debris netting too if that would be enough?
Has anyone else had similiar or same problem?

We have a rabbit issue at our plots and all are fenced, but when I planted squash on a spare patch outside the netting, the rabbits didn’t touch them. Could it be rats or mice eating the fruits? A rat in my garden had a good chew on some I had put in the compost.

Just been wondering if debris netting over crops would be enough?
Last year my brassicas under debris netting were untouched so wondering if covering squash would be enough this year?
My concern is where I would be able to get chicken wire from at this time?

I’m sure you’d get rabbit proof wire netting on line  :)

Did look at a few places but lots were out of stock.
Will have another look and see if I can at least get enough to put around my squash and sweetcorn  :nowink:
Thanks for advice  :nowink:
