Do i just leave year 1 and 2 asparagus to flower and die?

Basically, yes - you make it sound a bit cruel, but if you keep them well weeded and fed you should reap the rewards next year (and for the next 20+ years too.)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
