runner beans and comfrey tea remains
« on: April 26, 2020, 18:46 »
Hi
does anyone have any thoughts or experience with comfrey and runner beans?

Too be honest I dont normally do much with the runners but as I'll have a small amount of mushed comfrey leaves from the first batch of 'tea' I was undecided what to do with them. I could compost but the remaining plants are now getting big so i'll probably add some of that to my compost bin.

So mushed comfrey in the trench? along the row or not at all. I'll also be putting in climbing beans as well.
Or fresh comfrey in the trench and the 'tea' remains in the compost??

Cheers
Twood

Great stuff you have there, Twood!

It is such a versatile natural fertiliser, it would work anywhere - we prefer to soak it to a tea, but others just layer it in trenches and let it do its magic!

We always splurge it all over runners as they gorge themselves on the stuff, and if you can get any nettles in the mix as well, then you get double bubble - literally..;0)

I'm interested in this, this year is the first time I've had a go at comfrey tea, so will keep the leftovers for the beans. How long is it recommended to be left stewing for?

well thats good to know. Thanks Growster. I do have a small nettle patch in the garden I may well throw them in with the next batch

Thrutchington like you this is my first year making this. I've read its about 3 weeks but i'm sure there will be experienced 'brewers' who might tell you different.
WARNING It stinks to high heaven. I have mine in a 25L wine bucket with lid in the shed to protect the neighbours from the smell!. Obviously there will be regulars who have 200L waterbutts full of the stuff.

Good luck with it

I sometimes use my third cut to mulch if it's a hot dry summer. Helps keep the moisture in the soil and will release nutrients as it rots.

One way to use comfrey - a method often used by chums here, is to stuff the leaves into a 4" pipe, and let the rotting drips collect at the bottom, for diluting!

I've never tried it as we always use a large bucket, but if you're short of space, it sounds like a great idea!
