How many corn plants
« on: April 26, 2020, 10:14 »
Hi

We have managed to germinate 12 corn plants .

Is this enough for a block or do we need to get more going ?

Thanks in advance

That'll be fine I only usually grow about 12, and as long as they're in a block rather than a row, it's not a problem  :)

The important thing is to make a block and not a row.
I have grown them in fours, fives and sixes before without any problems in a few different different areas around the plot. Even grown a four in a raised bed before.
Last decade or so have a section of the plot where I have 12 together in a rectangle 4x3 rows.

My Dad grows his in a block of five, four on each corner and one in the middle, with great success.

I normally do 16 (i.e. 4x4) and that gives the two of us more than we need so we end up freezing some of the Kernels.

They really need planting out now with those shoots - leaving them too long in the pots leads to a high failure rate. But the weather has turned so can you give them protection with a cloche or fleece? That will help no end.

I've planted them this afternoon and put cut off squash bottles over them for a bit of extra protection . Hopefully that will be ok

I have 2 types (20 of each)..about 10 inches high in root trainers ...they have romped along with the warm weather...they have been moved into an unheated greenhouse to slow them down...hopefully the warm weather will come back in a few weeks so I can get them out...albeit SO early...although last year they went out late due to the weather. soi will have to wait and see ::)

Planted 15 of mine out yesterday in Tyneside but covered 9 with polythene and the rest used some plastic bottles and a couple of old street light shades to protect from possible cold.
Have 4 spares in greenhouse that where not as far on good weather had got me sowing them earlier than normal. Plants where about 150mm high roots starting to come out of the 4" pots  looked ok today only time will tell.

That's a tidy plot you've got there!  :) Puts me to shame.  :(

Mine are about 50cm tall and indoors. our veg patch wasnt ready in time to plant out.

Does that mean they will fail? should i start again?

I find planting out relatively big plants quite successful. I remember seeing Monty Don planting out some big plants from root trainers and he was successful so followed his lead. In my opinion you are much better off keeping them indoors getting bigger than planting them out when it’s cold and windy and having to improvise shelter.

In your shoes, I’d plant them out and sow some more as the new sowing will crop later anyway.

I've found problems transplanting when they've grown too big in pots but not started them in root trainers. Worth a try. Worst case is they fail but if you don't plant them out they've failed anyway.
