Advice needed on pruning a herb bed - new allotment
« on: April 21, 2020, 11:22 »
Hiya - hope you are all enjoying the sunhine this week!

I'm lucky enough to have acquired an allotment plot just two weeks ago and have been incredibly enthusiastic about weeding given the whole thing is overgrown. One part I haven't started tackling yet though is a herb bed that is still surviving from the previous owner.

The main concern is that the rosemary is huge and overgrown but I'm not sure how is best to cut it back. It seems to have sort of split into two bushes and I don't know if chopping off one whole side will kill the whole plant or if I'm better off cutting all the stems down to half the size or something? Any advice on how to get it under control without killing it? If I can salvage part of the cuttings I'd also like to plant some in a pot in the house for easy use.

Amongst the dandelions I've also spotted, mint, sage, a very small bay plant (tree?), oregano, chives and lavender but there is a plant in there that I can't identify. It looks like the rosemary or lavender but doesn't smell like either of them. Does anyone know what it could be (I've attached a close up photo)?

I've also put up photos of two plants which I think are both oregano but if anyone could confirm or deny that would be much appreciated!

Many thanks on your help with any of the above!

To me they look like a mixture of rosemary's and possibly marjoram.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Agree with goosegirl second herb looks like marjoram (oregano?).
As to Rosemary I doubt you could kill it!! It does go woody after a time so you might want to try taking cuttings and see if you can generate new plants. ( If we weren’t locked down I would suggest using something fancy like dipping in hormone rooting powder and planting but at present I would just stick cuttings in whatever compost you have to hand)
Good luck HH
