Are Ants in a raised bed a problem?
« on: April 17, 2020, 18:24 »
I uncovered the last of my raised beds recently and discovered at least one ant's nest. This bed is for my brassicas and they won't be ready to plant out for a few more weeks so I have time to deal with the nest/s if necessary.
My question is: do I need to deal with them? Will the ants harm my seedlings when I plant them?

I don't know about brassicas but last year my strawberry's were untouched by slugs but a lot were eaten by ants.

If ants are making a nest among the roots of your plants, they will suffer due to lack of water. Best way to get rid is to uncover, dig over and throw lots of water on the area. The ants will soon move and birds will pick off any grubs/eggs exposed.

There aren't any plants in the bed yet - just soil and lots of well rotted manure. I discovered the ants when I uncovered the bed and lightly dug it over.
It's been raining today and rain is forecast over the weekend, so I'll take a look on Monday and see if they've scarpered. If not I'll add a few bucketfuls of water to encourage them to leave.

Definitely a problem if you want to plant broad beans in the bed, the ants will farm aphids on them.
