Struggling with mice or possibly voles.
« on: April 13, 2020, 20:13 »
Lost all my carrots last year to a mouse.  Seems to be back but making a hell of a mess of all my veg on one terrace.  The runs are visible so I assume mice again? They/it is then going down about 2 feet and making a mess of my leeks. Just appears to be its run is lifting them up the roots are obviously going to be disturbed. The same on the terrace above in this case beetroot.  Cant really say that there are any hills.
Another terrace well away a mouse is lifting the garlic. I plant dog poo in the runs but that doesn't appear to work.
Time for poison.  Any recommendations?

If its a mole when you dig the soil worms will come to the surface.
I think probably mice or voles.
I have been planting and every now and then  find a "run".
last year I had a few potatoes gnawed. also some beetroot.
no other damage.
have you tried a mouse trap? it would help identify the culprit.

Where would I put the mouse trap? Above or below ground? If I can't deal with the problem I will loose all the veg in that area. A large area. Thanks

Try the Big Cheese mouse trap, it's not a humane trap, but it's humane in the fact that it's a very quick death. I've seen it in action on a mouse so MIND YOUR FINGERS. It'll snap them instantly. It has a pheromone trap area with pheromone gunk that mice love. But peanut butter or chocolate spread works too.

I'd put them in the runs because that's a route they've repeatedly taken to create a track. So they'll definitely run along there and encounter the trap. But I have no experience with this so in practice I could be wrong.

I think moles are insectivores so wouldn’t touch carrots. Could it be rats? I had some in my garden which had nibbled at some squash I had discarded on the compost heap. Found that they had dug under the heap to make a nest and shifted a lot of material. I’ve dug out the heap now and they seem to have moved on.

did you have any luck catching whatever was eating your produce?
I have noticed little holes on my veg patch and have been very disappointed with not a single pea germinating. have now planted in the greenhouse.

No and yes. Made no attempt to catch them just put poison in run. 2 have not come back. Failed so far on one as was very badly disturbed this morning. Put another piece of poison in. Can't find entrances except on one terrace. On the inside of the terrace but not on the outside. Which means or should mean it has traveled underground some distance. No disturbance visible. I have mouse traps in attic may bring them down and put them in a pipe (otherwise the dog will have the bait). Will do that now
